University of Essex - Student life

At Essex, you’re not just a student, but a member of a global community. We’ll help you grow, and give you the confidence and skills to challenge convention and shape what goes on around you. Our students love us so much, they voted us Top 10 for student satisfaction for four years in a row (English mainstream universities, NSS 2016)!

Our Colchester Campus is home to a number of bars, and our night club, Sub Zero, which has won Best Student Venue in the UK. Our full calendar of events each term range from current music acts to themed nights to buffets. Recent guests include DJ Fresh, Jonas Blue, Tom Zanetti, and Jaguar Skills, as well as club nights by the Ministry of Sound, Club MTV and Pure.

Set in 200 acres of beautiful parkland on the outskirts of Colchester, Britain’s oldest recorded town, our Colchester Campus is built around five compact and bustling squares, which encourage our academics and students from different departments to work together, nurturing the interdisciplinary nature of our teaching and research.

Transport links to Colchester are excellent with access to London and the East of England via the A12 or train (hop on a direct train to London Liverpool Street and you’ll arrive in under an hour!). Plus, with Stansted Airport and the international port of Harwich nearby, travelling abroad is easy too.

University of Essex - Admission

Taught Masters programmes are offered in all of our departments. We will consider applicants with a 3 and above in their Bachelor’s degree from a recognised institution (2.5 for law students). Some courses require the first degree to be in a related field. Applicants should check with the Department to which they wish to apply.

For Research degrees applicants should have already completed a first degree and should demonstrate both an interest in and understanding of the area in which they propose to carry out research. Some departments may ask for applicants to have also completed a Masters degree, while others may be able to offer a Doctoral programme in place of this. Applicants should check with the Department to which they wish to apply.

University of Essex - Campuses

Our campuses in Colchester, Southend and Loughton provide an inspiring place to take your ideas further. Each of our campuses are within an hour of London and an airport making them as accessible as possible for you.

Among our campuses, you’ll find everything you need: accommodation, award winning innovative learning and teaching spaces, shops, cafés, restaurants, bars, banks, a post office, theatres and sports facilities.

Based in 200 acres of parkland, our Colchester Campus was designed in the 1960s to challenge both the physical and educational structure of a traditional university. With bold concrete structures all inter-linked together to form a number of squares, even our buildings encourage inclusivity and interdisciplinary teaching and research.

Opened in 2007, our Southend Campus is a vibrant town centre base offering courses from four of our departments. We’re proud of our exceptional facilities including The Forum, The Gateway Building, The Clifftown Theatre and Studios and University Square. Situated on the south Essex coast and with seven miles of award-winning coastline, it is often referred to as 'London’s playground'.

Our Loughton Campus is the smallest of our campuses and is home to the prestigious East 15 Acting School. We offer a compact and friendly campus with state-of-the art theatre space, studios and technical equipment, meaning everything is in one place. Located just five minutes from Debden underground station taking you straight to the heart of London, and on the edge of the ancient Epping Forest, you have the best of both worlds on your doorstep.

University of Essex - Facilities

Ranked among the top 5 UK universities for investment in student facilities according to the Times Good University Guide 2017, our commitment to giving you the best possible learning and teaching facilities is second to none.

We opened the UK’s first zero carbon business school building in 2015. More than one tonne of carbon is saved per day through the building’s energy efficient design, which also points to our responsible business practice in both our teaching and research.

Our £26 million Silberrad Student Centre and Albert Sloman library extension also both opened in 2015 which bring together all of our student services. As a whole project, it won a national Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) award in 2016 and is used extensively by students, staff and visitors.

A more recent investment of £13.2 million for our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Centre is due for completion in December 2017. It will include a 180-seat wet lab for Biological Sciences students and a 200-seat IT-rich exploratory learning space to help students from across the Faculty of Science and Health work collaboratively.

Building work is also underway for our brand new sports facilities, which will offer a host of new spaces including 12 badminton courts, 3 full size basketball courts, 3 netball courts and 5 volley ball courts.
