5 Reasons for Learning Foreign Languages

Communication is essential for human development. Without the existence of languages many of mankind’s achievements wouldn’t have been possible. As of today, the world is aware of the existence of more than 6 500 different tongues.

So what are the advantages of becoming multilingual? Is there a reason why we should think about adding a new language to our collection?

  1. English is not enough

It is known that more than a billion people on the planet are able to run a normal conversation in English. The majority of these individuals are not native speakers and they come from all sorts of backgrounds. The easy grammar, straightforward structure and convenient vocabulary, together with the modern needs of a lingua franca, are all a reason why English was introduced as an absolute must.  However, to understand other cultures more deeply, it is essential to learn their native language.

  2. Understanding the world

Languages are the key to the true appreciation of cultures, values and ideas. There are 195 nations which all share different history with their own achievements and beliefs. For a true and in-depth look into the diversity of humanity you have to devote a part of yourself and start with the most important symbol for all – the language. It is the first step towards understanding how people think, act and run their lives.

  3. Developing your mind and yourself

  4. Recent studies show that people who study foreign languages have a tendency to handle standardized tests better. In addition, they are able to make better decisions and display a more out-of-the-box type of thinking. This is explained with the effect of becoming more open-minded with the increase of your knowledge.

  5. Preparing for a different future

  6. With the evolution of the world economy there is a need of more people who are known as multilingual. Being in possession of two languages is no longer a big deal, as the modern job market is actively looking for people fluent in at least 3 tongues excluding English. Proficiency in Chinese, Spanish or French is widely appreciated due to the economic power of countries where they are spoken. With the increasing role of international business and multinational organizations it is important to have men and women who can freely communicate and operate with the major languages.

  7. Become part of the trend

  8. Modern students are well aware of the power of speech. As a result, the interest in programs based on languages is at its peak, with almost every university offering teaching degrees or research-oriented courses in European, Asian or Latin American tongues. What is more, the course structures often include a great deal of travelling, as visiting a specific country is important for the future user of a nation’s language. The curriculum of many programmes involves a great deal of literature, film studies and even the chance to be involved in creative writing.
