Master’s studies in Scandinavia

Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Finland and Sweden have so much more to offer than gorgeous winter landscapes or furniture stores. The countries of Scandinavia are primarily known for their outstanding education systems. Read on to learn why going all the way north to get a master’s is a step worth considering.

The benefits of Scandinavian universities

After earning their bachelor’s degree, more and more students are headed for Sweden etc. to get their master’s. That’s because the Scandinavian countries offer a highly appealing academic environment. Aside from not charging tuition fees, Scandinavia’s modern universities are known throughout Europe for the exceptional level of personal attention they give to their students. Prospective international master’s students can choose from a wide range of English-taught study programmes, meaning they don’t have to study the local language to get their degree. Moreover, postgraduate curricula in Scandinavia feature a high level of flexibility, making it easy for students to pursue their personal interests.

Application and admission

When applying for admission to a master’s programme, candidates in most cases have to submit their bachelor’s diploma, their CV and a letter of motivation. Some degree programmes may also require some proof of language proficiency or a letter of recommendation. Master’s programmes in Scandinavia generally take one to two years to complete, and the degrees are recognized everywhere thanks to the ECTS credit point system. If you want to study in Scandinavia, you should apply to your programme of choice at least one year in advance. Note that the academic year is divided into a fall term and a spring term.

Funding your studies in Scandinavia

If you have ever spent your holidays in Scandinavia, you know that the cost of living is often quite high. Much of what you save on tuition will go to accommodation and your daily needs. If you need additional funding, one option is to take out an educational loan, which you will have to apply for at least six months prior to the beginning of your studies. Financial aid for international students is also available from the universities in each country; check out their websites for more information. Up north, nature lovers with good self-management skills can pursue postgraduate studies that will substantially expand not only their career prospects but also their personal horizons in a cooperative learning environment.
