Consistently ranked as the world’s “most livable city”, Vienna offers an intriguing blend of modern urban life and Central European tradition. This is a city where quirky student hangouts sit alongside opulent coffee houses and contemporary art fills centuries-old palaces. It is where Mozart composed The Marriage of Figaro, Klimt painted The Kiss, and Freud wrote most of his works on psychoanalysis. Over 15,000 concerts are held here every year, including the Donauinselfest, one of Europe’s largest open-air festivals, on an island in the Danube.
The Austrian capital bursts with world-class galleries and museums ideal for delving into art, culture and history. Leafy parks and riverside beaches, beer gardens and vineyards, street fairs and culinary fests offer a myriad of entertainment options from spring to fall. All year round, street fairs feature everything from jewelry, clothing and artwork to organic fruit and vegetables, and of course, there are always treasures to be found in Vienna’s famous flea markets. A real melting pot of cultures, Vienna offers a multicultural calendar of festivals that celebrate a variety of food, traditions and music from all around the world.
Outstanding public transport and a sprawling network of cycle paths mean that most of the city is accessible within 30 minutes. Less than 100 kilometers from Vienna, the Alps beckon with hiking and biking trails in warmer months and skiing and snowshoeing opportunities in winter. Vienna is also ideal for those who wish to travel around Europe.
