Biomedical Neuroscience

The program in Biomedical Neuroscience is an ´Elite Master Program´ funded by the Elite Network of Bavaria. The overall goal is to train excellent scientific professionals in the field of biomedical neuroscience, i.e. to train graduates to achieve a top-level understanding of neuroscience theory and experimental practice, as well as a focus on neurological and neuropsychiatric diseases. The MSc-BmN is embedded into a highly professionalized and successful medical and scientific training infrastructure. It nurtures excellence in neuroscience training and didactics by offering an exemplary curriculum on basic and disease-related neuroscience at the intersection of the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including dedicated modules to foster professional and personal development. This includes both the theoretical background and the technical skills for commonly used experimental approaches in basic and clinical research. The students are closely guided through the program by an individualized mentoring program.

Course Content

Biomedical Neuroscience is an interdisciplinary program executed by lectures from natural science institutes as well as from clinicians and clinical scientists. Aim of the program is an intensive education in the field of basic neuroscience and neuro-psychiatric diseases. This includes both the theoretical background and the technical skills for commonly used experimental approaches in basic and clinical research. Teaching is performed in a combination of theory and hands on classes and includes project oriented scientific work in the laboratories of the participation institutes. The curriculum covers all parts of basic neuroscience from molecular to cellular and systhemic neuroscience, as well as disease related translational neuroscience. Career

Since neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders are on a rise in developed societies, further expansion of research and development in neurology-related health care and biomedicine is to be anticipated. The qualification profile of the graduates includes an in depth understanding of brain function and structure, from molecules and cells to large-scale circuits, behavior and the mechanisms and treatment strategies of different neuropsychiatric diseases. Through their lab rotations and practical scientific work, the graduates will be familiar with the most relevant technologies for basic and clinical research and with their capabilities in the field of neuroscience. Furthermore the graduates will be able to evaluate scientific data and apply appropriated statistical tests. With their interdisciplinary knowledge, the graduates have a wide neuro-biomedical competence, bridging the usual gap between standard medical education and natural science curricula. Hence our graduates will enter a growth market – so the career prospects of the graduates of the MSc-BmN program will be extremely good in basic academic research, clinical settings and in industry.

Admission

To be eligible to apply for the MSc Biomedical Neuroscience, you will require a Bachelor degree or equivalent from a university in the field of natural sciences such as e.g. Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine, Physics or an equivalent degree program. Depending on the modules completed within their study program, applicants with undergraduate degrees in Psychology, Health Science, Chemistry etc. may be eligible to apply as well. In addition, applicants, who have completed at least five years of medical studies and have passed the second part of the state examination in medicine or veterinary medicine will be accepted, too. After online application through the system of the Technical University of Munich, candidates have to pass a two step selection procedure. In the first step your written application is valued by at least two lecturers. After passing this step you will be invited for a personal interview. Internationalization

The MSc Biomedical Neuroscience has a close international cooperation with the Hebrew University, a renowned center of neuroscience research with an extensive and exceptional track record in successful MSc training. This interaction builds on the complementarity of expertise, with the TUM Medical School providing training in medical know-how and the Hebrew University providing special expertise in biomathematics. This collaboration builds of long-standing ties is research and education with faculty on both sides being involved with reciprocal visits. This collaboration includes also exchange of students for lab rotations, courses or internships and common summer schools.
