Economics Program at Barcelona Graduate School of Economics

The Barcelona GSE Economics Program provides students with rigorous training both to initiate a successful academic career and for technically demanding careers.

 

Students who complete this program will acquire an excellent grounding and deep understanding of the field's foundations, applications, and policies covering theoretical and empirical approaches.

 

Students will perform technically demanding analyses using powerful analytical and quantitative tools, and will design and conduct an independent master's project.

 

The Barcelona GSE Economics Program is the main gateway for admission to the PhD program in Economics, Finance and Management from the Department of Economics and Business at Universitat Pompeu Fabra.

 

The PhD program at UPF has an outstanding international reputation, with placements in the most prestigious institutions and universities world-wide.

Economics Program at Barcelona Graduate School of Economics: Course Content

Program Schedule

In the Fall term, students are required to take the following brush-up courses:


Probability and Statistics
Calculus and Linear Algebra or Advanced Mathematics
STATA


During the Fall term, students may choose between advanced or standard core courses, depending on their background and their interest in pursuing a PhD program. Advanced courses will be required for students who wish to be considered for admission to the GPEFM PhD program at UPF. A master project, which will be supervised in regular meetings with an advisor, will allow each student to put their knowledge into practice and improve their writing and exposition skills.


The Economics Program course listing is broad enough to offer students specialized training in a number of areas:


Macroeconomics with a focus on monetary and fiscal policy
Microeconomics
Political Economy
Labor and public economics
International economics
Development economics
Business and market organization
Behavioral and experimental economics
Financial economics

Solid command of analytical and quantitative Economics

Knowledge of a wide range of specializations in different fields of economics

Who will benefit from this program?

Graduate students in economics, mathematics, or engineering
Aspiring PhD students looking for a rigorous master program in economics
Junior analysts or professionals from the workforce looking for a postgraduate degree with advanced tools in quantitative economics

 

At the Barcelona GSE we look for excellence and talent. Key elements of a strong application are a high GPA, a sound statement of purpose and a standout reference letter. Strong knowledge in Economics and good quantitative skills are also recommended.

 

Application requirements

An undergraduate/bachelor/grado/laurea, or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university (for Bologna degrees, a minimum of 180 ECTS are required).

A typical applicant would hold a University Diploma in Economics, Finance, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics or Business Administration. See our Student Profile for more detailed information.

An advanced level of English language skills: TOEFL score of 90 or better / IELTS Academic Test score of 6.5 or better



Not required but highly recommended:
GRE General Test
