Master Engineering Systems: Embedded Systems

In this master track, you will focus on becoming an authority on modeling and smart distributed Systems. You will learn to design and implement architectures for distributed embedded systems, innovation services, and advanced algorithms to solve complex tasks. Students will learn to model and validate complex non-linear systems with multiple inputs and outputs using UML and/or SysML, black box modeling and system identification. Students will learn how to create a digital feedback controller for a linear physical system and to apply control strategies. You will learn to model and validate systems with multiple inputs and outputs using both white box modeling and system identification. You focus on control applications used in industry.

  • experimental research and laboratory exercises
  • model development and simulation exercises
  • group cases
  • minor projects
  • a major project including a management game

Master Engineering Systems: Embedded Systems: Content

Module 1: Systems Modelling
Applied Physics
Introduction modelling
Practice modelling and simulation
Energy Based Modelling
System Identification
Minor project modelling systems including Research skills
 

Module 2: Applied Control
The module covers the following tasks: analysing an uncontrolled system, creating a feedback controller, applying an advanced control strategy and applying a controlled system.

 

Module 3: Distributed Systems
The module provides an understanding of the principles on which distributed embedded systems are based, such as architectural design, protocols, algorithms, fault handling, and maintenance. The key principle is real-time behavior and how this affects quality requirements (resource limited reasoning). These principles are applied during a minor project that follows the values and principles of agile software development and uses the C programming language.

 

Module 4: Big data and small data
The following courses are taught in the Big data and small data module:
System identification
State and parameter estimation
Advanced modelling minor project

Master Engineering Systems: Embedded Systems: Career

As an embedded systems engineer you are involved in the design, development, production an evaluation of all kind of intelligent systems and smart devices. You also possess valuable skills in applied research and project management.
 

As a graduate of the Master track in Embedded Systems, you develop innovative electronic products using microcontrollers. They often work in a team with other engineers and people from other disciplines. Using customer requirements and specifications, the embedded software/hardware developer develops the electronic hardware and software that make up a high-tech product. The content of this Master’s programme is based on our constant interactions with our industrial partners and our applied research focuses on their needs and interests.

To enrol in the Master Engineering Systems: track Embedded Systems, you need a Bachelors degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline, with a GPA of 2.8 or higher based on a 4.0 scale. International students need to be proficient in English.

Graduation project

All master graduation projects are motivated by real-life problems, supplied by companies related to the area of your Master Track. A master thesis is written, and the project is presented in an oral examination for a major project committee. In most cases, the thesis-related work is carried out at the company. This means that a representative of the company is involved, to verify (1) whether the thesis results match the expectations of the company, and (2) whether the rated aspects of the master thesis are relevant for the company. In this way, feedback is obtained on the professional requirements regarding the intended learning outcomes.
