Epidemiology
In the Master's in Epidemiology you acquire extensive knowledge and practical skills in epidemiologic research design and implementation, quantitative analysis and its application to human or veterinary medicine and public health. The knowledge and skills gained form a solid basis for health research and disease control programmes, including applications in developing countries.
This two year research programme comprises such core theoretical courses as 'Study Design' and 'Modern Methods in Data Analysis.' You choose from five specialisations: Clinical Epidemiology, Veterinary Epidemiology, Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases, Pharmacoepidemiology or Environmental & Occupational Epidemiology. You undertake a practical research project (which may be completed at an external company or research institute), that results in a publishable scientific paper. A final Master's thesis based on a literature review of a relevant topic completes the programme. Graduates may go on to a PhD programme, or a position as an epidemiologist in various settings. This programme is also offered in a 1.5 year post graduate format.

The Graduate School of Life Sciences, a joint effort of Utrecht University and the University Medical Centre Utrecht (UMC), oversees all Master’s programmes that deal with microorganisms, plants, animals, humans, the molecules of life, and the study of health and disease. As a student of this graduate school, you will have access to interdisciplinary courses and research groups that match your interests and specialisation. Our Epidemiology programme offers you an integrated learning experience through the close relationship between epidemiological research and clinical practice, exemplified by the fact that the UMC chose Clinical Epidemiology as one of its main research themes.
Utrecht University is one of the main centres for epidemiologic research in the Netherlands, combining several high-quality epidemiological research groups in various faculties. Utrecht University offers animal epidemiology courses through our Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, the only such faculty in the Netherlands and one of the world’s leading faculties in the veterinary field. In addition, the University hosts the Utrecht Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS) and the renowned Institute for Risk Assessment Sciences (IRAS), providing you with additional opportunities for multidisciplinary research work.
Mentoring system
During your research project, you will be supervised by a tutor – a staff member from one of the participating research groups in the Master’s programme.
Utrecht University also offers you excellent facilities to make your studies more successful and your stay more pleasant.

THE U/SELECT PROGRAMME
U/Select (Utrecht Selective Life Sciences Extracurricular Track) is the Life Sciences Honours Programme for selected students of the Graduate School of Life Sciences. It is a two-year extracurricular programme for excellent student who seek to broaden their horizon and who want to get more out of their Master’s programme.
The goals of U/Select are:
Utrecht Summer School
Write your own PhD proposal
A maximum of ten students per year can follow the extracurricular honours trajectory, during which they will write PhD proposals and possibly obtain funding. The MSc Epidemiology has received a grant from NWO (The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research), giving five MSc Epidemiology students the opportunity to start their own fully funded PhD project directly after their MSc.
Young Innovators
Are you curious, entrepreneurial, intellectually versatile, socially responsible? Do you want to get more out of your Master's programme, and learn to work across disciplinary boundaries to both research and actively (co-)create innovative initiatives that will make the world a slightly better place? Then the Young Innovators honoursprogramme (15 EC) might be of interest to you!
Three core areas of research and innovation
The programme will focus on exploring and designing innovations in three areas:
Think outside your discipline
These multifaceted themes demand the joint efforts of experts from the sciences and humanities alike. They require knowledge of energy, climate dynamics, food, technology, and health. But insights into the dynamics of societies, law and economics, languages and cultures, or history and philosophy are just as essential.
The issues transcend national and cultural borders. Therefore the programme aims at a substantial participation of international students and is taught in English.
