Information Technology Law at University of Tartu

The study programme has a very practical focus. A significant part of teaching in this programme will simulate real-life situations. Students gain access to 30 IT Law practitioners and IT specialists from around the world participating in the programme. As consultants, lecturers, or mentors, they synchronize the legal education with the technical developments in the ICT sector.

 

Broad and comprehensive understanding of IT Law: we provide a systematic understanding of all major subfields of IT law as well as skills necessary for practicing in this area. Along with that, we create extensive links between technical, legal, and policy aspects of development and uses of ICTs, putting heavy emphasis on case studies, real-life exercises, trend assessments, and problem-solving.

 

The students will master a set of technical skills typically required in the ICT sector, e.g. elementary skills in programming, cryptography, database technology, and software engineering.

 

Graduates will be ready to provide legal advice on ICT related matters across jurisdictions and work anywhere in the world. They will be able to perform interdisciplinary and comprehensive regulatory, analytical, and expert work in the field of IT Law, having all necessary skills to face the challenges posed by the extraterritoriality, novelty, and complexity of its problems.

Information Technology Law at University of Tartu: Course Content

1-year MA in IT Law curriculum is divided into 6 components:
 

General Knowledge:

  • Fundamentals of ICT (3 ECTS)
  • Information Infrastructure And Architecture (3 ECTS)
  • Introduction to Programming (3 ECTS)

 

E-Environment:

  • Information Security (3 ECTS)
  • Public E-Services (3 ECTS)
  • Privacy and Data Protection (3 ECTS)

 

E-Entrepreneurship:

  • E-Commerce and IT-Contracts (3 ECTS)
  • Legal Steps in IPR Intensive Enterprise Life Cycle (6 ECTS)
  • IP Protection in the Field of Information Technology (3 ECTS)

 

Cyber Crime and Cyber Security:

  • Cyber Defence and International Cyber Security (3 ECTS)
  • ICT Litigation, Digital Evidence, Computer Forensics, and Cyber Crime (3 ECTS)

 

Meeting Challenges in IT Law:

  • Practical Training in IT Law (incl. TechStartup Legal Clinic and Simulations) (3 ECTS)

 

Master’s Exam (incl. IT Law Lab) (15 ECTS)
 

Electives (6 ECTS)

Information Technology Law at University of Tartu: Career

Graduates of the programme are information technology law specialists equipped with the necessary skills to successfully engage and excel in the process of legislative drafting as well as to conduct both analytical and expert work in matters related to ICT.   • 4-year bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification (240 ECTS) in Law. Applicants with a 3-year bachelor's degree (180 ECTS) must have a master's degree in Law to qualify
  • English language proficiency (IELTS - 5.5; TOEFL - 75)
