International Relations at the University of Groningen

Are you fascinated by international relations? Do you want to become a specialist in this field? Then this Master's degree is what you are looking for.
Within the one-year Master's degree in International Relations, you choose one of the following six Master's tracks:

International Security: its main focus is the phenomenon of, and theoretical reflection on, 'violence' in its broader context.

International Political Economy: it focuses on the interaction between states, markets and societies. Its primary aim is to increase our understanding of the dynamics of these three building blocks.

European Politics in a Global Perspective: it explores the history, theory and policies of the European Union and her member states.

Geopolitics & Connectivity: the study of power, space and connectivity in international relations

International Relations and International Organization: combines and explores all five areas mentioned above.

East Asian Studies: it focuses on the international relations of contemporary East Asia, in particular the political economies of China, Japan and Korea

International Relations at the University of Groningen

 

The Master's degree programme International Relations is 60 ECTS. The basic element is the module Advanced Theory of International Relations. This module must be followed by all students. You choose two research seminars and a Capita fitting with your track, all in your first semester. During your second semester, you will write a Master thesis (in the field of your track) and you will do a placement.

Advanced Theory of International Relations (5 EC)

Research Seminar 2 (10 EC)   
Capita Selecta (in your track) (5 EC)    
Master's Placement (10 EC)   
Master's Thesis (20 EC)


Curriculum

Because the programme starts in September as well as in February, all courses are offered both in the first and in the second semester.

International Relations at the University of Groningen

 

The Master programme in International Relations prepares its students for professions and research careers where knowledge of international-political developments and the ability to analyse and assess complex issues and to form grounded judgements are relevant.
Many graduates become policy advisors for national governments, NGOs, and international organisations in international politics. An increasing number of graduates also use their analytical skills to advise international businesses. Research, media and communication are also prospective fields of employment.

Additional requirements English: A VWO diploma or a subject certificate for VWO English (mark 6 or higher), minimum requirement of TOEFL iBT 90 (with a minimum of 21 on all items), or IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum of 6 on all items). Language Centre English Test (LCET) level B2/C1 overall (a score B2 for one component may be compensated by a C1 for another component).  

previous education
Students with either a Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences (including - but not limited to - Economics, Political Science, Development Studies, Psychology, Sociology, Social Geography), or an internationally oriented Bachelor's degree such as International Relations, Regional Studies, European/International Law, or (Modern) History can submit an application to the IR Admissions Board.

After you complete your application, the IR Admissions Board will assess whether your educational/academic background meets the specific programme requirements, and will consider the level and curriculum of your previous studies, and the grades you have obtained.
The Admissions Board will then determine whether:
direct admission is possible
a student has to complete the pre-Master's programme first: 
a student cannot be admitted

EU/EEA students application deadline 
01 May 2021 for starting in September 2021 
15 October 2021 for starting in February 2022
