Master in Tourism Destination Management at Breda University of Applied Sciences

In this master’s programme you will learn to match the supply of international tourism destinations with the demand of tourists in a responsible manner. The guiding principle in this process is making a positive contribution to the development of and opportunities for people and businesses in the destination areas. The programme lasts one year and consists of three phases. The theory part is dealt with in the first phase. In the second phase you will conduct a research project at three different far-away travel destinations. Finally, the third phase centres on the graduation project.

Master in Tourism Destination Management at Breda University of Applied Sciences: Curriculum

The curriculum is subdivided into three phases: theory, practice and dissertation.

Phase 1 - Theory in Breda
During the first phase, you will gain theoretical knowledge and develop your professional skills. This enables you to effectively analyse the current situation and available potential for development strategies at various tourism destinations. Destination theories, models, developments and practical cases will be studied. Courses are given by lecturers, along with
an interesting team of visiting lecturers and professors from international organisations and universities. Students interact on a daily basis with this specialised team of tourism professionals and academics.

Phase 2 - Practice at three types of destinations
The second phase is a field research project of three months at three different tourism destinations in Asia-Pacific. This offers you a unique learning environment, while focusing on practical research and consultancy assignments. Destinations visited in previous years were Indonesia, Singapore, Australia, Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Fiji. You work in small teams, understanding complexity of tourism management from perspectives of different stakeholders: Large tourism related enterprises, Small and medium-sized enterprises, Public organisations

Phase 3 - Dissertation (Final Thesis)
The final phase of the master’s programme comprises the execution of independent research and the writing of a dissertation at any place in the world. Practice and theory should be brought together, in which is strived towards new insights, theories or generalisations.

Master in Tourism Destination Management at Breda University of Applied Sciences: Admission Requirements

If you want to apply for this programme, you should have a bachelor’s degree, preferably a Bachelor of Business Administration, for example in the field of tourism management, leisure management, hotel management, economics, commerce, general management or fi nance. Bachelor’s students with such a BBA degree are directly eligible if they meet the following criteria: knowledge (bachelor’s level) of tourism planning and development, knowledge (bachelor’s level) of cross-cultural studies, academic skills at bachelor’s level (e.g. methods and researching techniques). If the mentioned criteria are not met, a self study package can be requested to eliminate these deficiencies. As a non-native speaker, you need to be able to demonstrate your profiency in English. Eligible candidates will be invited for an interview.
