Master of Public Policy at Hertie School in Berlin

The Hertie School’'s Master of Public Policy (MPP) provides the tools tomorrow’s decision makers need to analyse policies, critically assess policy innovations and evaluate solutions. The programme offers an analytical, problem-oriented education in governance, policy analysis, management and leadership alongside real-world experience in the public and private sectors. It brings together perspectives from economics, political science, law and sociology, and trains students in quantitative and qualitative methodologies.
 

At the end of their first semester, MPP students choose a specialisation in one of the following areas of concentration:
 

  • Policy analysis
  • Management and organisation

Master of Public Policy: Course content

The Master of Public Policy is delivered in seven modules: 
 

I. Foundations of Public Policy
II. Tools of Public Policy
III. Economics
IV. Professional Development
V. Advanced Tools
VI. Portfolio Electives
VII. Master's Thesis
 

Within these modules, students specialise in either policy analysis or management and organisation.

Master of Public Policy at Hertie School: Career

At the Hertie School, we know that career planning is a lifelong matter. Our dedicated career team is here for you –both during your time at the Hertie School and after you graduate. To help you meet future employers, the Career Development team has established relationships with a range of institutions such as ministries, international companies and NGOs. Schedule a one-on-one career counselling session or take part in group workshops, alumni panels and other exclusive events. Furthermore, with our global alumni network offers you will join an international community of successful policy professionals in leading organisations in many countries.
 

All MPP students must complete a mandatory internship as part of the curriculum. Those who want to gain even more work experience also have the option of pursuing a Professional Year in between their first and second year. Students who participate in this programme leave the Hertie School for 9 to 15 months in order to acquire professional experience. Master of Public Policy at Hertie School: Application

Candidates from all academic disciplines are welcome to apply to the MPP programme.
 

Application requirements:

  • Bachelor of Arts (or equivalent) in any discipline
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Letter of motivation
  • Academic transcripts
  • Two letters of reference
  • English proficiency certificate (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge ESOL or Duolingo)
     

Application deadlines:
Applications are accepted between 1 October and 1 May. If you are seeking financial assistance, we encourage you to apply by our priority deadline on 1 February. Admissions decisions are made on a rolling basis. Please apply via our online application portal: application.hertie-school.org.

 

Early-bird deadline 30 November (automatic tuition waiver of 2,000€ for those who submit their application by this date)

Master of Public Policy at Hertie School: Financial Support

The Hertie School offers full and partial scholarships that cover 10% to 100% of study fees. About half of our students receive direct financial support from the university. Master of Public Policy at Hertie School: Study Abroad

MPP students can spend their third semester at a partner university where they attend four elective courses. If you want even more international experience, you can spend an entire year at a partner school in a dual-degree programme with one of the following Hertie School partners:
 

  • Bocconi University
  • Columbia University, School of International and Public Affairs
  • London School of Economics and Political Science
  • Sciences Po, School of Public Affairs
  • Syracuse University, Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs
  • University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Public Policy
