Management, Policy Analysis and Entrepreneurship in Health & Life Sciences: Community-based Health Technologies at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

How can we incorporate (end) user needs in developing eHealth solutions for community-based care? How can notions of patient-centred care best be implemented?

How to effectively manage societies’ concerns during the Covid-pandemic?

 

Providing the best possible answers to these complex questions calls for cooperation between several disciplines and actors in society, from government, industry and social institutions to consumers and patients. The Master Management Policy Analysis and Entrepreneurship in the Health & Life Sciences (MPA) will give you a unique, multi-level perspective on this wide range of disciplines:

Management, Policy Analysis and Entrepreneurship in Health & Life Sciences: Community-based Health Technologies

What factors should be considered when establishing electronic health records. How do developments in genomics impact basic health insurance?

 

How should we respond to an increase of Meningococcal disease? These are the types of questions addressed in this programme. You’ll start your study with three compulsory courses, introducing you to the core competences of the programme, these are:

  •  Analysis of complex societal issues related to the health and life sciences;
  •  Formulation and implementation of strategies to deal with complex societal problems through interdisciplinary research;
  •  Effective cooperation and communication with both societal actors and with researchers from scientific disciplines other than health and life sciences.

 

You’ll be able to choose one of five specialisations, each requiring you to take one compulsory course, which counts for 6 EC. You will also follow two other courses within your specialisation for a minimum of 12 EC (18 EC in total). You will conduct two internships, of which at least one should be in the field of your specialisation

Management, Policy Analysis and Entrepreneurship in Health & Life Sciences: Community-based Health Technologies

I have an international degree

 

In order to gain admission to the Management, Policy Analysis and Entrepreneurship in Health and Life Sciences Master’s programme, you will need to have at least a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited research university including at least three full years of academic study amounting to a minimum of 180 ECTS or equivalent. We do not require a GRE or GMAT test score. A Bachelor degree obtained at an applied university or higher vocational education (HBO in Dutch) in most cases does not grant direct access to the programme (only exceptionally high ranking students stand a chance of admission).

 

Specific requirements for the Management, Policy Analysis and Entrepreneurship in Health and Life Sciences Master’s programme

 

You qualify for admission if you hold a University Bachelor's degree in:

  •  Biochemistry
  •  Bioinformatics
  •  Biology
  •  Biomedical Sciences
  •  Health and Life Sciences
  •  Health Sciences
  •  Human Movement Sciences
  •  Medical Informatics
  •  Medical Natural Sciences
  •  Medicine
  •  Pharmaceutical Sciences
  •  Psychobiology

 

If you have a University Bachelor's of Science degree in another subject than listed above, but related to the fields of Health and Life Sciences, you are still welcome to apply. In that case your application will be assessed by the MPA admissions board.

 

General English language proficiency requirements

VU Amsterdam requires all applicants to take an English test. You can, however, begin your application without having the test results. Exceptions are made for students who have completed a Bachelor's or Master's in Canada, USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand or Australia.

 

The minimum English language proficiency requirements for admission to this Master's programme are:

  •  IELTS: 6.5 overall
  •  TOEFL Internet-based test: 92 overall
  •  Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): A, B, C
  •  Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): A, B, C

 


 

I have a Dutch higher vocational education (HBO) bachelor’s degree (premaster)

Students with a HBO degree in ‘Biologie en Medisch Laboratoriumonderzoek’ (HLO) have direct admission to the MPA programme.


 

Admission via MPA Admissionboard:

If you have a Bachelor’s degree of a Dutch University of Applied science (HBO) other than HLO, you are still welcome to apply for the MPA programme if your degree is in a related Health and/or Life Sciences field.The MPA Admission Board will review your application and decide on your admission. Please note that you then do have to submit the following documents with your application:

  • Curriculum Vitae, that includes your personal details and lists uour previous education and relevant work experience. An Europass CV template could be used, however other formats will be accepted too.
  • Letter of Motivation - A 1-2 page letter stating your reasons for applying to the programme.
  • Transcript of Records (in Dutch/English) - A list of grades that your previous academic study/studies. If you have not yet completed your educational programme, please send temporary transcripts showing the grades you have received to date. In that case, please also send us a list of courses that are not on the temporary transcripts but that you will have to take to complete your programme. Please note: The certified copy of your transcript needs to be certified.


 

Language requirements

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam requires international students and students with a HBO degree to pass an English language proficiency test. This requirement can be met if no longer than two years before the start of the programme the applicant has successfully completed one of the following examinations with the minimum scores indicated:

  • ELTS (Academic): 6.5 (due to Covid-19 the IELTS Indicator will also be accepted for admissions in 2020)
  • TOEFL paper based test: 580
  • TOEFL  internet based test: 92
  • VU TOEFL ITP: 580

Direct admission

You are eligible for direct admission to the Master's in Management, Policy Analysis and Entrepreneurship in Health and Life Sciences if you hold a Bachelor of Science degree of 180EC from a Dutch University in:

  • Health and Life Sciences
  • Health Sciences

  • Medical Natural Sciences
  • Medicine

  • Beta-gamma Studies (with a major in Chemistry, Ecology and Evolution, Biomedical Sciences, Brain and Cognition, Physics and Astronomy or Mathematics)
  • University Colleges (with at least a major in a beta subject)
  • HLO (including sufficient English test)
