MSc in Mathematics

This MSc full degree programme in Mathematics is offered in English.

To be accepted into the master’s programme in Mathematics, you need to complete a relevant bachelor degree.

With a Master's degree in mathematics from the University of Southern Denmark, you will be well qualified for many exciting jobs in private or public organizations (industry, financial institutions, schools, universities, administration) or you may choose to pursue a research career.

In the master’s programme in Mathematics, you develop your knwoledge of scientific theories and methods, your experience in working independently with scientific questions and your ability to express yourself clearly on academic issues. The master’s programme thus qualifies you to participate in scientific work and independently handle business functions with your background in these learned skills.

Mathematics and computer science research

Research in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at University of Southern Denmark covers three core areas:

  • Applied mathematics
  • Computer science
  • Mathematics

Within the field of Mathematics, it is especially the fields of operator algebra, banach spaces, topology, geometry, discrete maths and graph theory which are researched at the department.

The most common way to finish your degree in Mathematics is a master and thus the title of MSc.
The scientific aspect of the master’s programme is most evident in the final thesis project which takes 6 months. Work on this project takes place in close contact with a supervisor and often in connection with the supervisor’s own research. It should be made clear, however, that the master’s degree is not a research degree. To achieve a research degree, you must complete a PhD.

For mathematicians, unemployment is virtually unknown.

Analytical qualification in the business sector

With a degree in Mathematics you have many career opportunities in Denmark as well as abroad. Because of the analytical qualifications which are acquired through the Mathematics programme, mathematicians are often preferred for analyst positions. In economy, the health sector, construction etc. there are often enormous amounts of data which need to be structured and analysed.

Mathematicians are both qualified to use appropriate mathematical analysis methods as well as develop new methods for solving complex problems, such as developing a method – an algorithm – for analysing scans to find diseases or using a range of methods to predict deviations in economic market conditions. Many such methods are created in collaboration with computer scientists and therefore most mathematicians also have basic knowledge of programming.

Statistical analysis of data

Some mathematicians focus on statistics and they have great career opportunities in analysis institutes, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies etc. There are many political and health-related decisions which are made on the basis of statistical analyses. As a statistician, you are basically good at discovering whether there is just cause for a certain causal connection – for instance whether a certain pharmaceutical is the cause of healing or whether a particular political agenda is the cause of higher voting rates.

Research

With a completed MSc in Mathematics you have the opportunity of applying for a position as PhD student at the Faculty of Science.
