MA in Middle East studies

The Centre for Contemporary Middle East Studies at the Faculty of Humanities offers an international master degree in Middle East Studies.

The purpose of the graduate programme in Middle East Studies is to provide thorough knowledge of contemporary historical and political conditions of the Middle East.

The student will acquire both historical overview of the Middle East and detailed insight into central issues of the shaping of the modern Middle East - issues which have contributed and will continue to contribute to form the Middle East, Middle East Studies, and the processes that will characterise the region and the research fields in the beginning of the 21st century.

The study programme will also focus on the Middle East involving issues concerning Mediterranean perspectives, cultural encounters, refugee problems and human rights issues and European and Danish integration.

The Middle East programme gives you a systematic insight into Middle Eastern history, cultural and religious issues and political developments. Furthermore you get insight into economic and social conditions in the region. The programme contains also special study areas and a 3 month internship in the Middle East at a company, organization, an embassy or maybe an NGO.

Middle East Studies is offered as a 2-year Graduate programme. To be enrolled in Middle East studies, you must have completed your bachelor's degree in a relevant subject.

Graduates who have completed this master programme are entitled to use the title of MA (Master of arts) in Middle East studies.

Job opportunities

The aim of the programme is to provide students with qualifications that will motivate them to seek jobs and functions in the Middle East and that will equip them to fulfill these – including jobs associated with the Middle East in a European or Danish context. In addition, the aim is to provide students with qualifications that will equip them for tasks in the Danish, Scandinavian and European integration sector.

The graduates in Middle East Studies have been employed in many different areas. The secret services in Denmark (PET and FE) and the Danish integration sector (in ministries and municipalities) are the top scorers. The EU, international organizations and NGO’s represent other areas where our candidates have found jobs. Typical job areas are:

  • Danish ministries, mainly the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Ministry for Integration, the Secret Services (PET and FE)
  • Danish municipalities and regions (the integration sektor)
  • international organisations, NGO’s
  • the culture- and tourism sector
  • Danish companies operating in the Middle East
  • research, teaching, jobs in the information sector, media etc.

Entry requirements

Students with BA degrees in History, Ethnography, Geography, English, Religion, Media Studies, Journalism, Negot, Political Science or Philosophy from the University of Southern Denmark (SDU) or with comparable degrees from other universities are eligible for admission to the M.A. programme.  

Students with other corresponding undergraduate programmes will be qualified for admission after an assessment from the Study Board.
