Philosopy at University of Tartu

Philosophy is a unique 2-year master’s programme that aims to provide students with skills and knowledge of the research methods of contemporary philosophy. Students can choose from four specialisations: history of philosophy, practical philosophy, philosophy of science and theoretical philosophy (incl. analytic philosophy). The programme is focused on research: all students will work closely together with a supervisor who will help student design the programme based on the student’s interests; students can join many international research groups and conferences and students’ MA thesis has to be on article level.

 

What will students get from the programme?
 

  • Unique programme: gives a general overview of philosophy with four specialisations;
  • Internationally connected faculty and international staff, many world famous guest lecturers;
  • Study-related workshops and conferences;
  • Integration into up-to-date philosophy literature;
  • Great research opportunities: students can contribute to ongoing research and participate in conferences. UT organizes yearly 3-5 international conferences in the area of philosophy;
  • Wide range of literature: the Department of Philosophy and the Centre of Ethics have a common library which gathers systematically both classic and up-to-date literature;
  • International career prospective: graduates can continue their studies or work in any field from public sector to business and journalism.

Philosopy at University of Tartu: Course Content

Master's students can choose to specialise in one of the following areas:
 

  • Practical Philosophy: ethics, meta-ethics, applied ethics, bioethics, aesthetics, social- and political philosophy, philosophy of education;
  • Theoretical Philosophy: philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, philosophy of logic, philosophy of psychology, epistemology, metaphysics, metaphilosophy, experimental philosophy;
  • Philosophy of Science: general philosophy of science, philosophy of physics, philosophy of chemistry, philosophy of biology, social and cultural studies of science, social epistemology;
  • History of Philosophy: Ancient Greek philosophy, Classical German philosophy, Modern philosophy.

Why study philosophy at the University of Tartu?

  • Quality of our Department of Philosophy. For the second year in a row (2017-2018) we have been part of the best 150 departments of philosophy in the world as assessed in the QS rankings.
     
  • No tuition fee for most study places. Instead, scholarships are available! We provide 10 tuition-waiver scholarships for the best candidates from both EU and non-EU countries. Students can also apply for maintenance stipends.
     
  • Individual approach. Our program allows each student to find and pursue their own philosophical interests, while taking each student’s educational background into account.
     
  • Real “hands-on” research experience. Thanks to both individual supervision and research-driven courses and seminars, every student can be involved in a number of research activities with our staff.
     
  • International staff and student environment. Our philosophers all have extensive international experience, coming from or having studied and worked in the USA, UK, Germany, etc. Students have come from all over the globe (except Oceania so far!).
     
  • Outstanding academic events. We are home to the prestigious Frege Lectures. Our MA students have also regularly organized graduate conferences.
